Leadership Panel Bios

Special Agent Brian Herrick – Philadelphia division’s CyberSquad

Mr. Herrick entered on duty as a Special Agent (SA) of the FBI in December, 2002. From 2003 to 2006, SA Herrick was assigned to the Buffalo NY Division where he worked both violent crime and cyber matters, and served as the Division's InfraGard Coordinator. In Buffalo, SA Herrick attained certification as a CART Digital Forensics Examiner.
In 2006, SA Herrick transferred to the Philadelphia Division where he worked computer intrusion investigations until 2009 when he was promoted to Supervisory Special Agent, leading the Philadelphia Cyber Crime Task Force. In this role, SA Herrick managed all cyber investigations involving computer intrusions, the online sexual exploitation of children, intellectual property rights violations, identity theft and Internet based frauds.

In June, 2012, SA Herrick was promoted to Assistant Legal Attaché in Frankfurt, Germany. As the Senior FBI representative to the US Consulate in Frankfurt, SA Herrick handled all violations of criminal laws within Germany, and was embedded with the German Federal Criminal Police (BKA), where he worked numerous joint investigations with European partners, covering both criminal and national security matters.

In June, 2016, SA Herrick reported back to Philadelphia Division where he is currently investigating criminal computer intrusion matters.

SA Herrick is a police instructor and has taught cyber classes throughout the US, as well as internationally at INTERPOL in Lyon, France and ILEA in Budapest, Hungary, as well as locations throughout Europe, Africa and the Middle East.

John Biglin – Chief Executive Officer, Interphase Systems, Inc.

After many years of working directly with life sciences firms, John pioneered the creation of Ready-IT BioPharma™, the life sciences industry’s first turnkey IT service platform that integrates core business and IT systems combined with Cloud technologies, support services, disaster recovery and regulatory compliance.  His firm has since expanded the Ready-IT™ concept to other industries.

John holds a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Science from Rutgers University and an MBA from Penn State University.

Karl Ackerman – Principal Product Manager, Sophos

With 20 years in the IT security space as a software developer, architect, speaker and product manager, Karl has a passion for cyber security and a deep commitment to drive criminal syndicates and nation state actors off our networks and out of our devices. Over the years Karl has collaborated with organizations from small businesses to national defense agencies, both to understand the threats these organizations face and to design and build the software used to defend them from adversaries. With an engineering background, Karl has patents ranging from cryptographic methods for authentication to attribute correlation for device detection. Karl is currently employed at Sophos as a principal product manager for endpoint protection.

Moderator: Edward McAndrew – Partner, Ballard Spahr

Edward J. McAndrew is a counselor, investigator, and trial lawyer who helps clients navigate life in the digital world. Named a “Cybersecurity and Data Privacy Trailblazer” by The National Law Journal, Mr. McAndrew advises clients on cybersecurity, digital privacy, cyber-incident response, social media, online speech, defamation, commercial, employment, intellectual property, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance, and enforcement matters. He also advises clients on cyber-based national security issues, as well as governmental demands for third party data and assistance in investigations. Outside of the cyber arena, he handles civil and criminal investigations, litigation, and trials in various substantive areas.  

Mr. McAndrew most recently served for nearly a decade as a federal cybercrime prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Offices for the Eastern District of Virginia and for the District of Delaware. A Cybercrime Coordinator and National Security Cyber Specialist, Mr. McAndrew has worked in every major area of technology facilitated crime, including network intrusions and cyber-attacks; digital espionage; identity and intellectual property theft; financial, government contracting, and tax fraud; money laundering; export control violations; cyberstalking; obstruction of justice; online child exploitation; narcotics and firearms trafficking; and terrorism. He has handled a multitude of high-profile, complex and sensitive investigations, trials and appeals—many involving cutting-edge legal and technological issues. 

Prior to joining the U.S. Department of Justice, Mr. McAndrew was a litigation partner and deputy practice group leader in the Washington, D.C. office of an international law firm. In addition to managing a national practice group, he focused on complex civil and regulatory litigation and white collar investigations in various industries, including advertising, broadcasting, chemical, education, energy, gaming, financial services, health care, insurance, media, retail, telecommunications, and transportation. 

Mr. McAndrew serves by appointment on the Delaware Supreme Court’s Commission on Law and Technology. As the leader of the Commission’s Data Security Working Group, he has developed leading practices and educational programs relating to cybersecurity and digital privacy for lawyers and legal services organizations. 

He is a frequent commentator, presenter and author on legal issues related to cybersecurity, digital privacy, cybercrime, computer forensics and Internet safety.
